A presentation by
Chas Langelan

The Survey of Washington, D. C.

Andrew Ellicott's surveys today are epic stuff of lore. Considered the finest American surveyor of his time, Ellicott was one of only two men this side of the Atlantic who could establish precision latitudes and longitudes from the stars. In addition to his many accomplishments, Ellicott was asked by Thomas Jefferson to train Meriwether Lewis in the necessary surveying skills for his upcoming secret expedition west.

Mr. Langelan's presentation focuses on perhaps the most challenging surveys Ellicott conducted in his lifetime, the survey of Washington D. C. Mr. Langelan's will cover the surveying, design and lay-out of the original City of Washington and well as the roles of several of the key people involved including Pierre L'Enfant and Benjamin Banneker.

Chas Langelan is a retired land surveyor who, besides having held  office in several surveying related professional organizations, is the first private surveyor ever registered by the District of Columbia. He currently serves on the board of directors for the Surveyors Historical Society and gave historical surveying demonstrations at the Philadelphia Chapter's 2008 Regional Meeting on Surveying and Cartography.
