About a dozen Chapter members heard a unique public lecture,
Saving an American TreasureThe Lewis and Clark Herbarium during
the next 200 years, by Richard M. McCourt of the Academy of
Natural Sciences Botany Department on January 23, 2003. After the
illustrated talk guests went to the Botany department where Dr.
McCourt and Dr. Lucinda McDade showed the new housing for the Herbarium
and some of the original specimens in their new cases. Thanks to
the Botany Club for inviting the Chapter to this talk.
In May Joel Fry of Bartram's Gardens will speak about "Philadelphia
Botany and Horticulture in the time of Lewis and Clark."
From November 6, 2004 through March 20, 2005, The Academy of Natural
Sciences will host the National Bicentennial Exhibition organized
by the Missouri Historical Society. National treasures-- the Academy's
plants specimens, handwritten journals, maps, equipment, scientific
specimens and Native American artifacts-- will be on display. For
more information, visit the Academy
of Natural Sciences website.
